Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka is the island’s first great capital (4th century BCE–11th century), a UNESCO World Heritage city famed for colossal brick stupas like Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya, and the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi—a living offshoot of the Bodh Gaya tree.
